Introduction
Imam Al-Hasan Al-Basri was one of the most renowned scholars among the Tabi‘un (the generation following the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ). He was widely respected for his deep knowledge of Islamic sciences, eloquent wisdom, and profound spiritual insight. His legacy continues to inspire seekers of truth and righteousness.
His Lineage and Early Life
Al-Hasan Al-Basri’s full name was Abu Sa’id Al-Hasan ibn Abi Al-Hasan Yasar Al-‘Awfi Al-Basri. He was born in Al-Madina Al-Munawwara two years before the end of Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab’s reign.
His father, Yasar, was a freed slave originally from the region of Maysan (located between Basra and Wasit in Iraq). After his emancipation, he settled in Madinah and started his family there.
His Status in Knowledge and Sufism
Al-Hasan Al-Basri was a master in many Islamic disciplines:

It is historically confirmed by Imam Al-Suyuti in “Raf’ Al-Khirqa” that Al-Hasan received the Sufi cloak (Khirqa) from none other than Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA). Most Sufi spiritual lineages (Turuq) trace their chains of transmission (Isnad) back to him.
What Scholars Said About Him

One of his most memorable pieces of advice was in a letter he wrote to Caliph Umar ibn Abdul Aziz, in which he said:
“Beware of this world—it’s like a snake: smooth to the touch but deadly in its bite.”
He also famously said:
“This world is a place of deeds. Whoever keeps company with it while renouncing it will benefit. But whoever loves it will be destroyed by it.”

It was also reported that someone had a dream in which a bird took the most beautiful pebble from the mosque. Ibn Sirin interpreted this as a sign of Al-Hasan’s imminent death—and he passed away shortly after.
